Taiwan to grant visa-free entry to selected Asian transit visitors

12/16/2008  (CNA)

Taipei, Dec. 15 (CNA) Taiwan will grant visa-free entry for selected transit visitors from five Asian countries — India, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia — beginning Jan. 20, 2009, as part of its efforts to attract upscale tourists, an official said Monday.

According to the official from the Tourism Bureau, citizens from the five Asian countries who also possess U.S. green cards or Canada’s Maple cards have been allowed to enter Taiwan without a visa from Dec.1 this year.

At the suggestion of the Tourism Bureau, the official said, the Executive Yuan has agreed to open the door wider for citizens from the five Asian countries, granting them visa-free entry for a transit visit if they have visas or tickets to the United States, Canada, Japan, the European Union countries, Australia and New Zealand.
